Dental Implants in Calgary — What They Cost, Who Qualifies & What to Expect
A missing tooth isn’t just a cosmetic problem. Every month without a replacement, the jawbone underneath begins to shrink — and once that bone is gone, it’s expensive to rebuild. Dental implants stop that process entirely by replacing the root, not just the visible tooth. For most patients, a properly placed implant is the last tooth replacement they’ll ever need.
This page covers what Calgary patients ask us most: what implants actually cost, whether you qualify, and what the process looks like from first consultation to final crown. If you have a question we haven’t answered here, call us — we’d rather spend five minutes on the phone with you than have you make a decision without all the facts.

What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed directly into your jawbone — acting as an artificial root. Over the following months, it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. Once stable, a custom ceramic crown is attached on top. The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth: no slipping, no adhesives, no restrictions on what you eat.
Unlike a bridge, which requires permanently shaving down the two healthy teeth on either side, an implant stands entirely on its own. And unlike a denture, it stimulates the jawbone the same way a natural root does — preventing the gradual bone shrinkage that changes your facial structure over time.
Implants vs. Bridges vs. Dentures: Which Is Right for You?
Three options exist for replacing missing teeth. The right choice depends on how many teeth you’re missing, the condition of your remaining bone, and your long-term goals. Here’s how they compare:
| Dental Implant | Dental Bridge | Denture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replaces the root? | ✅ Yes | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| Prevents bone loss | ✅ Yes | ⚠️ Bone still shrinks | ⚠️ Bone still shrinks |
| Affects adjacent teeth? | ✅ None | ❌ Must be shaved down | ✅ None |
| Feels natural? | ✅ Yes | ✅ Mostly | ⚠️ Can shift or loosen |
| Typical lifespan | 15–25+ years (post: lifetime) | 10–15 years | 5–10 years |
| Cost (Calgary) | $3,000–$5,000 per tooth | $2,000–$3,500 | $1,200–$2,800 |
A bridge costs less upfront, but it requires grinding down two healthy teeth permanently and typically needs replacing every 10–15 years. Over a 20-year period, most patients find the total cost of a bridge approaches or exceeds that of an implant — and the implant outlasts it while protecting the bone underneath.
Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most adults with one or more missing teeth are candidates. A formal assessment at our Calgary clinic will confirm your specific situation, but here’s what we evaluate:
What We Look For
- Adequate bone density — The implant post needs sufficient bone to anchor into. Most patients have enough if the tooth was lost recently.
- Healthy gums — Active gum disease must be treated before implant placement. We address this first if needed, so it won’t disqualify you permanently.
- Controlled systemic health — Uncontrolled diabetes and certain medications can affect healing. We review your medical history carefully at your consultation.
- Non-smoking or willingness to quit — Smoking significantly raises implant failure risk. We discuss this honestly so you can make an informed decision.
What If I Have Bone Loss?
Bone loss is common — and expected — after a tooth is extracted. Without a root stimulating it, the bone starts shrinking within weeks. If you’ve been missing a tooth for years, you may not have enough bone for a standard implant placed in the conventional way.
The solution is a bone graft, which rebuilds the implant site over several months before the post is placed. It adds time to the overall timeline, but for patients who want a permanent result, it’s worth it. We’ll tell you upfront at the consultation whether a graft is needed and what the complete timeline looks like.
For patients missing most or all of their teeth — especially with significant bone loss — All-on-4 implants are often a better fit. All-on-4 is designed specifically to work with reduced bone volume, using angled placement to maximize contact with available bone. Ask us about this option at your consultation.
How Much Do Dental Implants Cost in Calgary?
A single dental implant at Millrise Dental typically ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 CAD all-in. That price covers three components:
- Implant post — the titanium screw placed into the jawbone ($1,000–$1,800)
- Abutment — the connector piece between the post and the crown ($300–$500)
- Crown — the custom ceramic tooth visible above the gum ($1,200–$2,200)
Your consultation, digital X-rays, and 3D imaging are included in the treatment planning process. If a bone graft is required, that adds $500–$3,000 depending on the extent. We provide a complete written cost estimate before any treatment begins — no estimates after the fact, no surprises on your bill.
Does Alberta Insurance Cover Dental Implants?
Many private Alberta dental plans cover 50% of the crown portion and classify the implant post as a major restorative procedure subject to your annual maximum. Coverage varies significantly between plans — we submit a pre-authorization to your insurer before treatment so you know exactly what’s covered before you commit. We’ll never start treatment and leave you guessing about your out-of-pocket costs.
The Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) does not cover dental implants at this time. If you’re a CDCP patient, we’ll review all your replacement options during the consultation.
Flexible Payment Plans
We offer financing through iFinance Canada, with monthly payment plans across 12–24 months. Many patients find a single implant fits comfortably into their budget once spread over time. Ask our front desk team for current rates and options at your consultation appointment.
The Millrise Dental Implant Process — Step by Step
Getting an implant involves several appointments spread over a few months — but most of that time is your body doing the work, not you sitting in the chair. Here’s the full timeline from start to finish:
Step 1: Consultation & Treatment Planning
We take digital X-rays and a 3D cone beam CT scan to map your bone structure with precision. From this imaging, we build your complete treatment plan: exact implant positioning, whether a bone graft is needed, expected timeline, and a full itemized cost estimate. This appointment typically takes 60–90 minutes.
Step 2: Implant Placement
The titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anesthetic. Most patients describe the experience as less uncomfortable than a tooth extraction — pressure without pain. The procedure takes 1–2 hours. You’ll leave with a temporary healing cover over the implant site and detailed post-care instructions.
Step 3: Osseointegration (Healing Phase)
Over the next 3–6 months, the implant gradually fuses with your jawbone — this process is called osseointegration, and it’s what gives the implant its exceptional stability. You’ll come in for brief check-up appointments during this time, but there’s no significant procedure involved. Most patients resume normal eating within a week, avoiding only the implant site itself.
Step 4: Crown Placement
Once the implant has fully integrated, we attach the abutment and fit your permanent ceramic crown. For eligible cases, we use our in-office CEREC technology to design, mill, and place the crown in a single appointment — no impressions sent to an off-site lab, no temporary crown to manage, no second visit two weeks later. Missing Most or All of Your Teeth? Ask About All-on-4
All-on-4 dental implants replace an entire arch of teeth using just four strategically angled implants. They’re designed specifically to work with reduced bone volume — many patients who have been told they “don’t have enough bone for implants” are actually good All-on-4 candidates. Each All-on-4 case worth considering gets a free dedicated consultation at Millrise Dental so we can assess your specific anatomy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants in Calgary
How much do dental implants cost in Calgary?
A single implant at Millrise Dental ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 CAD all-in, covering the implant post, abutment, and ceramic crown. If a bone graft is needed first, that adds $500–$3,000 depending on extent. We provide a complete written estimate before any treatment begins — no surprises.
Does insurance cover dental implants in Canada?
Many private Alberta dental plans cover approximately 50% of the crown portion and classify the post as a major restorative procedure subject to your annual maximum. Coverage varies significantly by plan. We submit a pre-authorization on your behalf before treatment starts so you know your exact out-of-pocket costs in advance. CDCP does not currently cover dental implants.
How long do dental implants last?
The titanium post integrates with bone and can last a lifetime with proper care — implant failure after full osseointegration is rare. The ceramic crown on top typically lasts 15–25 years depending on your bite forces, oral hygiene habits, and whether you grind your teeth. A custom nightguard can significantly extend crown life for grinders.
What is the recovery time for dental implants?
Most patients return to work and normal daily activity within 1–3 days of implant placement. The osseointegration period lasts 3–6 months, but that time is passive — you’re not restricted or in significant discomfort during it. The only practical limitation is avoiding chewing directly on the implant site while the bone fuses.
Are dental implants painful?
The placement procedure is done under local anesthetic — you’ll feel pressure but not pain. Most patients compare the post-procedure discomfort to what follows a tooth extraction: mild soreness for 2–4 days, managed comfortably with ibuprofen. Sedation options are available for patients who are anxious about the procedure — let our team know when you book.
