Emergency Dentist in Calgary SW — Open Until 7pm

When dental pain strikes, Millrise Dental is ready. We hold same-day appointment slots every day for emergencies and stay open until 7pm Monday through Thursday. Our multilingual team speaks English, French, Dari, Farsi, Gujarati, Tagalog, Spanish, Hindi, and Japanese — so you can describe your symptoms clearly, even in a stressful moment.

Is This a Dental Emergency?

Some dental problems can wait a few days. These cannot — and waiting makes them worse. Call us immediately if you have any of the following:

  • Severe or constant toothache — may signal an infection spreading to the bone or jaw
  • Knocked-out tooth — re-implantation succeeds only within 30–60 minutes; call immediately
  • Cracked or broken tooth — sharp edges damage soft tissue and exposed pulp gets infected fast
  • Dental abscess (swelling, fever, bad taste) — oral infections can spread to the neck and airway
  • Lost crown or filling — exposed tooth structure cracks or decays rapidly without protection
  • Uncontrolled bleeding — post-extraction or trauma bleeding that won’t stop with pressure
  • Swollen jaw or face — indicates spreading infection; seek care the same day

Not sure if your situation is an emergency? Call 403-254-0406 and describe your symptoms — we’ll tell you in under a minute whether you need to come in today.

Emergency Dental Services We Provide

Our clinic is equipped to handle a full range of emergency dental services Calgary patients need, including:

  • Pain relief for severe toothaches and infections
  • Repair of broken, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Tooth re-implantation for knocked-out teeth
  • Same-day CEREC crown replacement (no temporary, no second visit)
  • Emergency treatment for dental abscesses and infections
  • Management of soft tissue injuries and bleeding

Our goal is to get you out of pain, stop further damage, and restore your dental health — all in a single appointment whenever possible.

What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

The 10 minutes before you reach us matter. Here’s exactly what to do for each common emergency while you make your way to our clinic:

Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part) — never touch the root
  2. Rinse gently under cold water for 10 seconds — do not scrub
  3. Store in milk, or hold it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist
  4. Call us immediately — re-implantation success drops sharply after 60 minutes

Severe Toothache

  1. Rinse with warm saltwater to reduce bacteria around the tooth
  2. Take ibuprofen as directed — it reduces both pain and inflammation
  3. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum — it causes chemical burns
  4. Apply a cold pack to your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling
  5. Call us to get on the same-day emergency schedule

Broken or Cracked Tooth

  1. Save any tooth fragments — we may be able to use them
  2. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water
  3. Cover sharp edges with dental wax (available at Shoppers Drug Mart) to protect your tongue and cheeks
  4. Avoid chewing on that side entirely until you’re seen

Lost Crown or Filling

  1. Apply temporary dental cement from the pharmacy to protect the exposed tooth
  2. Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods until you’re seen
  3. Call us — we can often handle crown replacements the same day with CEREC technology, no temporary crown required

Dental Abscess

  1. Do not try to pop or drain the abscess yourself
  2. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging
  3. Apply a cold pack to the area — do not apply heat
  4. Call us immediately — if swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest ER first, then follow up with us

What NOT to Do in a Dental Emergency

  • Do not ignore pain or swelling — oral infections can spread quickly and become dangerous
  • Do not scrub a knocked-out tooth — gently rinse only; never remove attached tissue
  • Do not store a knocked-out tooth in tap water — use milk, saline, or hold it between your cheek and gum
  • Do not apply heat to a swollen area — this can increase inflammation and spread infection
  • Do not attempt home repairs with household adhesives — these can damage your teeth and gums
  • Do not delay treatment — most dental emergencies worsen rapidly without professional care

After Your Emergency Appointment

Emergency care stops the pain and stabilizes the problem. Most cases also need follow-up treatment to fully restore the tooth. After your visit:

  • Take prescribed medications exactly as directed — antibiotics for infections are especially important to finish completely, even after you feel better
  • Cold compress for 24–48 hours to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 off)
  • Soft foods only — avoid anything crunchy, hard, or chewy on the treated side
  • Attend all follow-up appointments — emergency care buys time; the restorative appointment is what fixes it permanently
  • Call us if anything changes — new swelling, increasing pain, or fever after treatment are signs we need to see you again

Why SW Calgary Patients Choose Millrise for Dental Emergencies

Open When Other Clinics Aren’t

Most Calgary dental offices close at 5pm. We’re open until 7pm Monday through Thursday, and on Saturdays. Those extra hours exist because emergencies don’t follow business hours.

Same-Day Emergency Appointments

We hold dedicated emergency slots in every day’s schedule. When you call describing an emergency, you get seen the same day — not next Tuesday.

Our Team Speaks Your Language

SW Calgary is one of the most multilingual communities in the country. Our team communicates in English, French, Dari, Farsi, Gujarati, Tagalog, Spanish, Hindi, and Japanese — so when you’re in pain and stressed, you don’t have to struggle to explain your symptoms in a second language.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

If your emergency involves a broken or lost crown, we can mill a permanent ceramic crown in our office in under two hours. No impression trays, no temporary crown, no coming back in two weeks. Learn more about CEREC.

Steps from Fish Creek LRT

We’re at #15, 15 Millrise Blvd SW — beside the Shell station, diagonally across from the Fish Creek LRT station. Easy to reach from Shawnessy, Millrise, Sundance, Evergreen, Bridlewood, Silverado, and Legacy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care in Calgary

Is there a 24-hour emergency dentist in Calgary?

Millrise Dental is not a 24-hour clinic, but our extended hours cover the times most emergencies actually happen. We’re open Monday through Thursday until 7pm and on Saturdays until 3pm. If you’re experiencing a life-threatening emergency — such as facial swelling affecting your airway — go to the nearest ER first, then call us at 403-254-0406 for follow-up dental care.

How much does emergency dental care cost in Calgary?

An emergency exam typically ranges from $80–$150 CAD. Treatment costs vary based on what the exam reveals. Most Alberta dental insurance plans cover at least a portion of emergency exams and urgent procedures. Call our front desk and we’ll verify your coverage before your appointment.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out tooth, a dental abscess, uncontrolled bleeding, and any broken tooth causing sharp edges or an exposed nerve are all emergencies requiring same-day care. Mild sensitivity or a small chip that isn’t painful can usually wait for a regular appointment. When in doubt, call us — we’ll tell you in 60 seconds whether you need to come in today.

Can I go to the ER for a dental emergency?

Hospital ERs can manage dental infections that have spread to affect breathing or swallowing, or significant facial trauma. They cannot perform extractions, place fillings, or re-implant knocked-out teeth. For any tooth-specific emergency, call a dentist first. If you can’t reach us, take OTC pain relief and call the moment we open.

What should I do if my child knocks out a baby tooth?

Unlike adult teeth, knocked-out baby teeth are generally not re-implanted — doing so could damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Clean the area gently, manage any bleeding with light pressure, and contact our office so our team can assess the injury and monitor your child’s dental development.

We serve patients from Millrise, Shawnessy, Silverado, Evergreen, Bridlewood, Somerset, Legacy, and throughout SW Calgary. When a dental emergency strikes, our team is ready to help you get out of pain and back to normal as quickly as possible.
