Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp, which holds the tooth’s nerve and blood supply. When deep decay, a crack, or an injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the bone around the root and form an abscess.
A root canal removes the damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals it to keep bacteria out. The tooth stays in place, so you keep your natural bite and avoid the gap an extraction would leave.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
- Severe or throbbing toothache, especially when chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the food or drink is gone
- Swollen or tender gums near one tooth, or a pimple-like bump on the gum
- A tooth that has darkened or changed colour
- A cracked or chipped tooth, or a deep cavity
Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and only show up on an X-ray, which is one reason regular exams matter. If you have facial swelling that is spreading or affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room.
What to Expect During Treatment
- Exam and digital X-rays to see the infection and the shape of the root canals.
- Local anesthetic so the tooth and surrounding area are fully numb.
- Cleaning the canals: the dentist removes the infected pulp, then shapes and disinfects the canals.
- Sealing the tooth with a filling material and a temporary or permanent filling on top.
- Protecting the tooth with a crown if needed, since a treated back tooth can become brittle.
Treatment usually takes one or two visits, depending on the tooth and how advanced the infection is. When a case needs a specialist, we refer you to a certified endodontist.
Does a Root Canal Hurt?
With modern anesthetic, a root canal usually feels much like getting a filling. Most patients find it relieves the pain they came in with. It’s normal for the tooth to feel tender for a few days afterward, and over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough.

Aftercare
- Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has its final filling or crown.
- Brush and floss normally, keeping the area clean.
- Call us if swelling, severe pain, or a bite that feels off doesn’t settle after a few days.

Is a root canal covered by insurance or CDCP?
Most private dental plans cover part of the cost of root canal treatment. Eligible patients may also have coverage through the CDCP or IFHP federal dental programs, and we direct-bill CDCP. Call us and we’ll help confirm your coverage before your visit.
